DAEA is a national umbrella organisation of 34 member organisationes of non-formal and informal adult learning.

Non-formal and informal adult learning enhances general and vocational knowledge and skills of each individual. It improves the ability and motivation to assume self-administration and responsibility and it also provides people with the necessary competences that enable each individual to take an active part in a democratic society.

Non-formal and informal adult learning is based on community, equality, participatory democracy, responsibility and voluntary activity. Non-formal and informal adult learning offers time, space and the needed conditions in order to strengthen the qualifications of adults in an informal learning environment.

DAEA was established in 1941 to protect the freedom of assembly. After WW2 the organisation has become a professional organisation working in the interest of its member organisations in four fields:
  • Representation of interests towards policy makers
  • Member services like courses and conferences, networks, project funding, IT support, etc.
  • Innovation and development of non-formal and informal adult learning
  • Participation in the broader public debate based on the values of DAEA

DAEA is financed by member fees, government grants and grants of the surplus of  'Danske Spil’ (pool betting).
